I like taxonomies, they help me understand the world. I like meta-understanding of what I am doing - in moderation. Obsidian can as is used for a range of purposes. Here are a few
Keeping notes
When I do something cool in a tech related way, I like to note down what I did so I don’t forget. I have a tag called #howto that I add to these notes
Writing blog posts / tweets etc
A lot of people use Obsidian for writing. In his book, Building a Second Brain, Tiago Forte argues that second brains can be used as tool to capture information, categorise them, define them and finally write something.
Thinking
About what you are doing, what you might do, in general, processing
Tools like Obsidian can be a tool for thought because it allows writing. You can also come back to what you have said before and refine things.
A lot of people talk about capturing and processing ideas - personally I have never found a separate “capture” step to work that well.
People use Obsidian to write about what they are thinking. A nice feature of Obsidian is you can find things that you hve already written and add to it.
Planning and tracking tasks
There are plugins in Obsidian to tack tasks you can do and create reminders for the future. Taking notes can also act as a form of motivation.
Automating Process
Obsidian can be a good tool to automate processes in a semi-structured or as much structure as you like way. A first step can be to write about what you are doing and keep notes in a file. Then you might add checklists for when you are doing tasks. Then you might start adding code to automate more either with plugins or with my tool for quickly adding hacky features to Obsidian: Plugin REPL.
I am not affiliated with Obsidian. I am the author of plugin repl
